Debt Collectors Allegedly Claimed to Be Police Officers

Debt Collectors Allegedly Claimed to Be Police Officers
On behalf of Law Offices of Chad M. Hayward, P.C. posted in Credit Card Debt on Wednesday, November 6, 2013.

When you get in over your head in credit card debt due to taking on too much debt or simply interest rates that are causing your balances to rise and rise, a Chicago credit card debt attorney might be the answer. In Illinois, the rules surrounding debt collection are strict, and any agency that doesn’t abide by them can get in trouble. If you’re being harassed or receiving letters about legal action if you don’t pay your bills, consider the options you can take to get out of debt once and for all.

If you’re struggling with debt like so many Americans today, news like this will likely upset you. A release from Oct. 24 claims that one collection agency posed as law enforcement experts and police officers; the Better Business Bureau has responded by telling consumers all about the fraud. According to their information, the people calling are telling the consumers that if they don’t pay fees or fines, they will have criminal charges brought against them. According to the report, at least once consumer reported that a collection agency had called multiple times and claimed that it would call police and have her arrested for not paying.

These calls may simply be bogus collection calls, but if you’re in debt, these kinds of calls can be deceiving and stressful. The Better Business Bureau recommends that consumers don’t wire money during the calls and don’t give out personal information. The BBB also recommends that consumers don’t call the company that is calling back again, since reputable companies and police officers won’t ask for money to be wired over the phone or for extensive financial information. If you have any questions about whether the police are actually trying to get into contact with you, you can always call the local police department and ask, or seek out an attorney for advice.
